This summer has sucked here in Minnesota with the high temperatures and humidity. Much of the U.S. seems to be in a heat wave this year with lots of sun and very little precipitation. Driving on some of the gravel roads on my route is like driving through a sea of chalk. The dust gets everywhere! 

If there’s one thing that I learned about life before I became a rural mail carrier, it was to dress for the weather. I come from an athletic background so I’ve always tried to find clothing to make workouts and exercise more comfortable to help push the limits. The same concept can be applied to life as a rural mail carrier.

While many of my colleagues are literally soaked in sweat from head to toe after finishing their routes, I am generally pretty comfortable because I tend to wear moisture wicking clothing whenever possible during the hot summer months. It’s not a big secret or a big expense. What used to be hard to find and only available in sporting goods stores is now readily available both in-store and online. 

One of my personal favorites is the Sport-Tek Men’s Competitor Tee. It comes in a wide range of sizes and colors and most of them are under $10 on Amazon! That’s a small price to pay for feeling a LOT more comfortable on your mail route.

There are some other clothing suggestions that I will be making on this site to help other rural carriers out there be a little more comfortable on their job. We all know there is enough to think about on the route without worrying about getting overheated and passing out in your vehicle.
