If you were one of the unfortunate rural mail carriers who are working on recently adjusted routes and noticed a significant drop in your pay step after the recent mail count, I feel your pain because I am one of them myself.

In September of this year, I decided to switch routes after 20 years on the same mail route because I was tired of having to use my own vehicle and constantly dealing with repairs. A recently adjusted route had opened up in our office that used to be an auxiliary route but was adjusted to a 40K just 3 months earlier. Even though I took a pay cut from my 45K route, I decided it was worth the 5 step drop in pay not having to worry about my vehicle breaking down on the route every day.

Volume on this new route has continued to increase since it was adjusted 3 months ago but much to my surprise, when I returned from my vacation, I was told that it had dropped down to a 37H and not only would my pay drop significantly but I would also be forced to work 6 days a week! Needless to say, I was not (and am not) happy about this and have filed a dispute with the USPS and a grievance with the NRLCA union.

This is not an isolated incident as I have been told that it has happened with other recently adjusted routes across the country. The issue is that the USPS is using 12 months of data for their mail counts but do not bother to take into consideration that 9 of those months involve only partial data since the route was an aux route for 75% of the mail count time period.

This policy needs to be changed ASAP and even my management is in agreement about this.

For now, I need to wait to see how long the PO is going to drag this out but I will be asking for back pay for all of the time it takes between now and the resolving of the grievance. If you have had a similar experience, you need to reach out to your union rep/steward immediately and voice your concerns as I have done.

If the post office where you work at is anything like mine, you probably have all asked yourself the same question – and with good reason. Every week I am amazed by the lack of organization and managerial skills of what used to be a very proud American institution. Take the current situation at our office:

Two weeks ago our supervisor (who was not even capable of doing that job) was promoted to be a postmaster of another town within the state after less than a year of experience in the supervisor role. This past week we were notified that our own postmaster decided to resign her job position and yesterday one of the city carriers who was actually due to be converted to full-time decided to quit.

On top of that, 2 of our 3 RCA’s in the office quit a month ago leaving us with 1 RCA for 7 rural routes in our office. I wish this was a rarity but from what I have heard, this is becoming the norm these days at the USPS. Because of the shortage of workers, the full time rural mail carriers at our office are forced to work on their days off and I personally have yet to take a paid vacation day all year. When I try to explain the situation to friends and family, they think I must be making it up. They say: “That can’t be true. How can they do that?”

The lack of common sense in some of the decisions made by higher-ups in the Post Office continue to boggle my mind. It’s almost like they want us to fail by offering us as little support as possible while continuing to bury us with more work, more packages, no time off and increased stress.

We are all dreading what lies ahead with the upcoming holiday season just a few months away. The entire infrastructure of the USPS needs to change. For example, the fleet of vehicles in our office are in the shop more than they are on the road and those of us who use our own vehicles are seeing a dramatic increase in maintenance costs because of the extra miles and heavier loads courtesy of Amazon.

My own route averages double trips nearly 80% of the time now. This was a taboo in our office for as long as I could remember. We always had the mentality to never do a second trip and now I just come to expect it every day. If I don’t have to come back for a second load, it’s become a luxury for me and my expectations is that this is going to increase to three-load days on a regular basis very soon. It already has on some occasions.

Is there an easy solution to this issue for rural mail carriers? Most of the carriers in our office seem to think if the USPS were to follow the policy of UPS and hire extra package handlers, this would be a huge help for us carriers. How easy would it be to just hire some people to deliver packages only? They would not be required to learn entire routes; carry mail or convert their vehicles to RHD for deliveries.

These 3 things alone are what I believe is a big reason why it has been so difficult to find and retain RCA’s across the country.

And when an RCA is actually hired (like finding a rare species of bird), they are immediately asked to cover many routes with little or no training and scared away before they have a chance to succeed.

The USPS needs to do a MUCH better job in attracting and maintaining employees at all levels. Their philosophy of this being a desirable place to work needs to be re-examined. Look at what made people want to work for the Post Office many years ago and why so few people even consider it these days.

Sorry for the rant but this has been on my mind for a while and I personally do not see any light at the end of the tunnel unless some major changes are made from the top down with the entire USPS.

Some boots have been pretty good and others have been really bad. It’s really difficulty to find a work boot that’s both comfortable as well as functional and based on my experience wearing these Rock Rooster AK639 boots, I think these are probably the best all-around boots I have found so far.

They come in both insulated and non-insulated. I use the non-insulated ones and can say that they do well for me at temps above 30F. Looking at them, I was afraid they were going to be too heavy for extended use on a regular basis but they are surprisingly lightweight and extremely comfortable.

Lightweight and extremely comfortable

CoolMax technology keeps your feet from overheating and wicks away moisture

Waterproof membrane keeps water out while venting moisture

High quality horse leather

Come in both insulated and non-insulated

Available in both soft toe and hard toe versions

I wear them during the 30F-75F days of the year and am really impressed by their CoolMax technology which allows for moisture wicking and quick drying. Best of all, I can attest to the fact that they are definitely waterproof. Many work boots claim to be waterproof and fail to deliver. These boots do not. I have worn them in mud, slush, snow and water covering the entire tops of the boots and my feet always stay dry. If you’re looking for a great waterproof work boot, I would definitely recommend these for your rural mail carrier route.

What I like most about it besides the energy boost it gives me is that it does not give me jitters like many other energy supplements can do.

AminoLean also claims to improve your mental focus and that’s something all of us rural mail carriers can use, right? How else are you going to remember where all of those Amazon packages are stacked away in the back of your vehicle!

This supplement is vegan friendly, contains no sugar and zero calories making it great for weight management. I personally find the Acai flavor to be the best and have noticed it does not contain all of the artificial food colorings compared to many other powder supplements. One container offers 25 total servings but I typically cut the amount in half to double the servings and still find the decreased amount to be more than effective.

Why is it that every year we hear about how much money the United States Post Office has lost? Is it because the top level management has no clue what they are doing or money is being filtered to the wrong places? I think you all know the answer to that one? I’ve heard about the issues with our government mandating the pre-funding of retirement accounts for so many years that it’s time to think outside the box and look at some new ideas that can be controlled directly by the USPS and not be dependent on other government offices.

Most of it comes down to common sense – something the USPS (and government in general) seems to be lacking in spades these days. I may not be up on all of the latest analytics, figures, algorithms and other b.s. that the PO throws at us but here are some common sense ideas that I think (as do my other rural mail carriers) that could be implemented to generate more income immediately for the USPS.

USPS REVENUE GENERATING IDEAS

Ensure that everyone in top management has actual work experience as either a rural carrier or city carrier. If they have never done the job, they are not qualified to make decisions on our behalf. PERIOD!

Increase the cost of first class stamps to $1.00. According to the Office of Strategic Planning, the average cost of domestic first-class mail letter postage is $1.50 internationally. Are their postal delivery services superior to ours to account for such a discrepancy in costs?

Charge $1.00 annually for customers to have access to Informed Delivery. According to USPS in October 2022, there are 50 million Informed Delivery users in the U.S. While I personally find this number to be hard to believe, if in fact it is accurate, that’s an immediate $50 million going right back to the USPS! Do you really think people would complain about paying $1/year for this service? How about $5/year. That’s $250 million!! Etc…

Charge customers $1 every time they have us redeliver their mail after being put on hold. I don’t know what the numbers are on this but can you imagine how much money this would bring into the PO? Our office is constantly dealing with customers putting their mail on hold and having us redeliver their mail (and parcels) after their return. Sometimes this can be week’s worth of mail and not only does it take up space in our cases (which none of us have enough of) but it also is a pain in the butt trying to fit all of that accumulated mail in a customers box. I am aware most people have become extremely lazy the past few years here in the U.S. so the fear of charging that $1.00 for redelivery should not be much of a concern because how many of these customers are going to make the trip to their local P.O. just to save that $1 fee? Exactly! Not very many. This might be more difficult to implement than some other ideas but it’s something to think about

I am not an economic wizard when it comes to this sort of thing but just offering some simple, common sense suggestions that could generate much needed additional income into the USPS.

Are you a rural mail carrier working in a cold climate with snow and freezing wind chill temperatures? If you’re like me, you’ve experienced frozen fingers and frustration from not being able to keep your fingers warm while delivering mail during the winter months.

I have tried so many different types of gloves over the nearly 20 years I’ve been a rural letter carrier and have yet to find the perfect solution. The warmer the gloves, the bulkier they usually are and that makes them unusable for fingering the mail. On top of that, the newer postal scanners we are now forced to use are anything but reliable and were obviously not designed for cold weather climates. The touch screens tend to freeze up regularly and most of us are forced to remove our gloves to complete our scans.

Not only is this a pain in the rear but it means frozen finger tips and numbness. The job is already uncomfortable enough without having to deal with situations like this. Don’t hold your breath for USPS to implement any new “Northland Edition” for the scanners! We are forced to find our own solutions once again to make due with what we have to work with on our routes.

The so-called texting gloves I’ve tried really don’t work that great either with our newer scanners so I wanted to share the unlikely combination of cold weather hand wear that I’ve been using the past few years. It’s not ideal but seems to work better than most other gloves I’ve tried on the mail route.

Get yourself a pair of inexpensive Mechanix Wear SpeedKnit CoolMax Work Gloves. They are comfortable and even though they are not supposed to be made to work with touch screens, I have found that they work just as well as gloves made for touch screens.

What you want to do is “layer” your hands by first putting on a pair of latex or nitrile gloves. These act as a base layer and actually keep the height of your hands inside the gloves. Most Post Offices should provide these free of charge to carriers but if not, you can always purchase your own disposable nitrile gloves.

Once you have the disposable gloves on, slip the Mechanix Wear gloves over the top. The scanner should work decently for you even with the double layer you are wearing because of the thinness of both gloves. For most of you rural carriers, this should be all you will need but if you are delivering in the tundra like here in Minnesota where the temps and windchills can fall to -20F on the route, I suggest you place a disposable hand warmer bag on the backs of your hands in between the two pairs of gloves you are wearing. I have found this to work great on those extra cold days and because of the flexibility of the Mechanix Wear gloves, the hand warmer stays in place and is not cumbersome at all.

This winter mail carrier glove combination has helped keep my hands and fingers warm for 6+ hours a day on freezing cold winter days.

When I first started at the USPS over 19 years ago, I can remember having to take the civil service aptitude tests and being placed on a “waiting list” for future job opening with the US Postal Service. My oh my how things have changed! I feel like nowadays, if you have a pulse, you are eligible to work as a rural carrier. No felonies in the last few months? You’re good to go! Only convicted of 3rd degree manslaughter? When can you start?

If your office is anything like the one I work in, you are encountering the same shortage of rural mail carriers including RCA’s and ARC’s. This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed as I fear it’s only going to get worse.

Not only does this shortage of rural carriers cause added stress and additional work hours to those of us who still show up for work every day but it leads to mail delivery delays, angry customers, angry workers and should be a wake up call for those in USPS management.

Worker morale at the USPS has hit an all-time low at our office and I’m betting it’s the same at your post office and around the country. Whatever happened to those worker surveys the USPS used to hand out every 3 months? We haven’t seen any at our post office for at least 6 months and I’m sure it’s because management knows how bad things have gotten and want to pretend that all is OK by not having to read the poor results that they are guaranteed to see if they do hand out another survey.

This past holiday season at our post office was brutal. The amount of Amazon packages has gotten out of control and nobody in management seems to realize that what they thought was going to be the “savior of the USPS” is going to come back to bite them. USPS was not equipped to handle the volume of packages that Amazon is flooding us with and this is leading to a number of negative impacts to our workers that far outweighs any benefits they may claim it is bringing to the bottom line at the USPS.

Let’s face it. Things need to change or the situation is only going to get worse for life as a rural mail carrier. I have shared some thoughts and ideas with my co-workers that I’ll write about in an upcoming post on this site.

First of all, I need to apologize to all of you rural mail carriers out there for not staying up to date with my posts on this site. Like many of you, I have felt the burden of the never-ending onslaught of Amazon come down on me like a ton of bricks. Will it ever end? If it maintains this level now during the typical slower months of spring and summer, can you imagine what the holidays are going to bring again?

Let’s face it, the post office was not created (or prepared) to carry this type of volume – especially on the rural side. Many of us who provide our own vehicles on the route are finding that they just are not big enough anymore to handle the amount and size of packages we’ve been receiving. This was something I had predicted to my postmaster when the whole Amazon deal with the PO was first announced and was told not to worry about it. Guess what? I’m worried. .. and so are my fellow rural carriers.

When I first started working for the PO as an RCA nearly 20 years ago, I bought a used Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera to handle the route. How do you think that would work in today’s environment? I would need to make 3-4 trips a day! My 7-passenger SUV requires 2 trips a day nearly 25-35% of the time now. All it takes are a couple of huge boxes (toilet paper, paper towels, furniture, etc.) and it’s an automatic double trip. BTW, when did the Post Office get into the furniture delivery business?

I always wondered how it was determined for a package to be distributed to the PO or UPS. Is it a random draw out of a hat??? How many of you have had to haul a gigantic package to a customer’s door only to be met by the UPS driver dropping off a large envelope? Really? Am I missing something here?

Not only does this extra workload cause stress on our bodies but it also impacts our vehicles. My poor SUV has needed all 4 wheel bearings replaced this year already! That’s never happened to me before but I’ve heard other rural carriers report similar issues with their vehicle suspensions. It makes sense. Haul big loads on a regular basis and expect big repair bills on a regular basis.

Sorry for the rant but I’m sure many of you have felt the same way and are concerned about what the future holds in store with the major uptick in package deliveries. Let’s face it. People are lazy these days. I know it and you know it. Why bother going to the store to buy non-essential items in bulk when you can click a mouse and have your trusty civil servant drop them off at your door on a daily basis.

And now you get to factor in the drastic increase in gas prices besides. More on that in an upcoming post though. Take a deep breath and remember we are essential workers even though the people we serve the most probably don’t want to admit it.

Driving on some of the gravel roads on my route is like driving through a sea of chalk. The dust gets everywhere!

If there’s one thing that I learned about life before I became a rural mail carrier, it was to dress for the weather. I come from an athletic background so I’ve always tried to find clothing to make workouts and exercise more comfortable to help push the limits. The same concept can be applied to life as a rural mail carrier.

While many of my colleagues are literally soaked in sweat from head to toe after finishing their routes, I am generally pretty comfortable because I tend to wear moisture wicking clothing whenever possible during the hot summer months. It’s not a big secret or a big expense. What used to be hard to find and only available in sporting goods stores is now readily available both in-store and online.

One of my personal favorites is the Sport-Tek Men’s Competitor Tee. It comes in a wide range of sizes and colors and most of them are under $10 on Amazon! Some of us drive on the nastiest roads imaginable including dirt, mud, gravel, snow, etc. And driving with the window open at all times means the elements are going to find a way to get into your mail carrier vehicle.

Whether you have leather, vinyl or cloth seats, I have personally found that the small investment of installing seat covers can not only make your daily drive on the route more comfortable but it will also greatly help preserve your vehicle’s seats. I have used both cloth seat covers and a “leatherette-style” seat cover made by FH Group.

For the difference in cost, I would strongly suggest not going with the cloth style as they will still absorb moisture when it rains and snows inside your vehicle while the leatherette seat covers will prevent that moisture from soaking into your seats.

As I said, I can personally attest to the FH Group Perforated Leatherette Seat Covers. They come in a variety of colors to match (or contrast) your vehicle’s interior and are fairly easy to install once you get the hang of it. Keep in mind that these are “universal” seat covers – not “custom” seat covers. This means they are made to fit a variety of vehicles and are not specifically designed only to fit your vehicle. What does this mean to you?

They are going to cost much less than custom seat covers.

They are going to fit a variety of vehicles so there’s a good chance you may be able to use them on more than one of your mail carrier vehicles. I have been able to do that with my Ford, Honda and Toyota vehicles.

They are not going to be 100% super tight on your seats like a custom cover would be so expect a little movement every so often with all of the getting in and out of the vehicle that we rural letter carriers do on a daily basis.
